Flash floods and landslides triggered by relentless rainfall have claimed eight lives in Assam over the last 24 hours, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Three people, including a child, drowned in floodwaters in Golaghat and Lakhimpur districts, while five others were killed in landslides in the Kamrup (Metro) district. Two more were injured in these incidents.
The floods, affecting 175 villages across 12 districts—including Dhemaji, South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, and Kamrup—have impacted over 58,000 people. Nearly 7,000 flood-affected individuals are currently taking shelter in 16 relief camps and distribution centres set up by local authorities.
According to the ASDMA report, 791 hectares of cropland have been submerged, while floodwaters have damaged 22 roads, one bridge, and several embankments and public buildings including schools and Anganwadi centres. At least 194 animals were swept away, and over 75,000 livestock have been affected.
In urban areas, nearly 9,000 residents faced flooding in districts such as Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Cachar, and Darrang. Rescue and relief operations are being carried out by the SDRF, NDRF, Fire Services, and local administration.
Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah visited several flood-hit areas in Guwahati, including Basistha Chariali, Kamakhya Foothills, GS Road, and Rukminigaon, to assess the damage and oversee emergency response. He noted that several areas function like natural basins, accumulating water runoff from nearby hills, and added that two major drainage channels are under construction to improve flood mitigation.
